Colts sign Josh Freeman

The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agent quarterback Josh Freeman and promoted inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. The team also signed guard Kitt O’Brien to the practice squad and placed inside linebacker Josh McNary on the Injured Reserve list. Freeman, 6-6, 248 pounds, has played in 61 career NFL games (60 starts) and completed 1,164-of-2,020 passes for 13,724 yards with 80 touchdowns and 67 interceptions for a passer rating of 77.8. He also has recorded 922 rushing yards on 197 attempts. Freeman most recently played for the Brooklyn Bolts of the Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL) in 2015. He spent most of the 2015 offseason and all of training camp with the Miami Dolphins before being waived during final cuts on September 5. Freeman signed with the New York Giants as a free agent on April 21, 2014 and was waived by the team the following month. In 2013, he started three games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and connected on 43-of-94 passes for 571 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Freeman was waived by the team on October 3, 2013 and signed with the Minnesota Vikings four days later. He started one game for the Vikings and completed 20-of-53 passes for 190 yards and one interception. Freeman was originally selected by the Buccaneers in the first round (17th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. In four seasons with Tampa Bay he started 59-of-60 games and completed 1,144-of-1,967 passes for 13,534 yards with 80 touchdowns and 67 interceptions. Herrera, 6-1, 249 pounds, was signed to the Colts practice squad on December 15. He has spent most of the season (Weeks 1-5, 7-13, 15-16) on the team’s practice squad. Herrera has had two stints on the team’s 53-man roster, playing in Week 6 vs. New England and Week 14 at Jacksonville, and assisting on one special teams tackle. He was most recently promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on December 8. Herrera was originally selected by the Colts in the sixth round (207th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Georgia. O’Brien, 6-5, 310 pounds, re-joins the Colts after spending two weeks on the team’s practice squad (Weeks 8-9) earlier this season. He was originally signed to the Colts practice squad on October 31 and released on November 10. O’Brien spent time with Indianapolis in training camp before being waived during final cuts on September 5, 2015. He played the last two seasons in the Arena Football League (AFL) with the Cleveland Gladiators after his collegiate career at Ball State. In two seasons with Cleveland he appeared in 23 games. At Ball State, O’Brien started 36-of-40 career games for the Cardinals. As a junior in 2011, he started all 12 games for the second time in his career and was part of an offensive line that tied for 12th in the nation for fewest sacks allowed with 11.0. McNary, 6-0, 251 pounds, was elevated to the 53-man roster from the Colts practice squad on September 15. He played in 13 games (one start) for Indianapolis this season and totaled 21 tackles (10 solo) and 1.0 tackle for loss. McNary also contributed on special teams and recorded five tackles. He has played in 33 career NFL games (five starts) and registered 56 tackles (34 solo) and 0.5 sack. McNary has seen action in four postseason contests and tallied six tackles (three solo) and seven special teams tackles.
