Concern over FieldTurf in Meadowlands lingers
Two months after wide receiver Domenik Hixon went down with a season-ending knee injury on a non-contact play at New Meadowlands Stadium, at least one teammate has reservations about the FieldTurf surface.
Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka isn’t sold on the surface that has been installed. The Giants and New York Jets will meet Monday in their joint debut at the new complex. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Hixon, the team’s top return specialist, was lost for the season during a practice the Giants had at the stadium in June.
“There's always concern, especially since it was an injury that happened without any contact," Kiwanuka said, according to the New York Daily News. “I think the turf did play a big role in that.”
Giants general manager Jerry Reese said he didn’t believe the surface contributed to the injury. One change that has been made – removable Giants and Jets logos at midfield – have been nixed. The logos were creating seams in the surface and now there will be a permanent NFL logo at midfield. The teams will have removable logos in the end zones.
