Conflicting information on potential deal for Drew Brees
The New Orleans Saints wrap up minicamp today without Drew Brees but some believe the quarterback will be arriving soon – as in the next few days.
Others say not so fast.
WWL Radio sideline reporter Kristian Garic reports that Brees “very possibly” could be signed “as early as Friday morning” or “at the latest by Monday” because “the two sides have really closed the gap, and it may be just minor details at this point.:
Garic reports Brees will receive a five-year deal that will surpass Peyton Manning’s annual average of $19.3 million and says “I feel good about the information I've learned.”
But Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune is not getting the same information when it comes to a potential deal for the quarterback, who has missed the offseason program upset with the franchise tag.
“Sources with knowledge of the negotiations have said there is no indication a deal is that close,” Triplett reports. “It is possible that a deal could come together quickly whenever the two sides decide to speed up the negotiation process. For the most part, though, the two sides have been willing to let the clock tick down toward the July 16 deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term deals.”
Per Triplett, the sides have been $2 million apart on an annual pay out since early in the spring and have slowly worked to hammer out other details since.
Guess we’ll have to see if something happens by Monday.
