Coughlin: Burress incident cost Giants shot at repeat

Could Tom Coughlin be wearing three New York Giants Super Bowl rings right now instead of two?

Coughlin, in a taping of a YES Network “CenterStage,” covered a lot of ground, including what happened in the 2008 season when wide receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the thigh and was lost for the season.

The Giants were the defending Super Bowl champions at the time and had an 11-1 record. Coughlin believes his team would have repeated as champions had Burress not been lost for the season with what was a major distraction.

We were the best team in the NFL at the time of the shooting," Coughlin said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

The New England Patriots were the best team in the NFL the year before when they entered the Super Bowl 18-0 and Coughlin’s Giants team won. Maybe Coughlin is right. But 11-1 doesn’t necessarily translate into a Lombardi Trophy.
