EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has given rookie defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan a vote of confidence.
Hours after the defense gave another pitiful performance in a 45-38 loss to the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles, Coughlin on Monday said he had no intention of replacing Sheridan.
Sheridan was elevated from linebackers coach after Steve Spagnuolo was hired as coach of the St. Louis Rams.
Coughlin admitted he is disappointed in the play of the Giants' defense, which is ranked No. 28 in the NFL in points allowed. However, he said Sheridan has been coming up with good game plans, but for some reason there has been a rash of mistakes in games.
The Giants (7-6) have three games left. They are a game behind Dallas (8-5) for the final wild-card berth. New York plays at Washington next Monday night.
