Crennel: I'd be crazy not to consider Manning
INDIANAPOLIS _ A day after Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli declined to answer any questions regarding the club considering Peyton Manning, Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel took the bait.
"I'm not supposed to talk about anybody else's players, and he's still a player with Indianapolis, but with a talent like that, I would be crazy not to consider it if he were available. I'll leave it at that," Crennel said when asked hypothetically about the Chiefs' interest in Manning.
In something he can address without any fear of repercussions, Crennel talked about Kyle Orton, a free agent who played well as a fill-in last year when Crennel took over as interim coach replacing Todd Haley, and Matt Cassel, who got Pioli's endorsement as the starter for the present time.
"Probably if it were not for Kyle, I wouldn't be standing here either. I'm very appreciative of what he's done," Crennel said. "But until we get another quarterback on the team, Cassel is the guy. If we get Kyle on the team, and he comes back to us, then we're gonna see how it works out and we'll play the best guy."
Crennel also said the Chiefs would like to have receiver Dwayne Bowe and cornerback Brandon Carr back as free agents, but said the process would have to play out.
