Crennel says Clowney has to earn his spot

The Houston Texans aren't guaranteeing an instant starting job for top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney as he makes the move from defensive end to outside linebacker.

“He’s going to earn his spot, in my eyes," defensive coordinator Romeon Crennel said. "If he learns, then chances are that he’ll get playing time. If he doesn’t learn, then he probably won’t get as much playing time."

Clowney is expected to compete immediately for playing time.

Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilus are also slated for major roles.

Clowney is a supremely talented pass rusher, but the Texans are following the tradition of not just handing him a job.
