Darren Sharper charged with drugging, raping two women

Former New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper has been charged with allegedly drugging and raping two women, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office announced.

Sharper will be arraigned Friday on two felony counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, the law enforcement agency announced in a statement.

Sharper allegedly met the women at a Hollywood nightclub, invited them to a party and stopped at his hotel room where the crimes allegedly happened.

He was arrested Jan. 17 and is free on $200,000 bail.

Prosecutors are going to try to raise his bail to $10 million because Sharper has been under investigation in New Orleans.

Sharper is indefinitely suspended from his NFL Network analyst job.

Sharper, 38, alleged used Ambien on the women.

He hasn't been charged with a crime in the New Orleans case.

The woman told police that Sharper took her to his apartment and sexually assaulted her without her consent, according to a report from the New Orleans Police Department.

Sharper's attorney in New Orleans, Nandi F. Campbell, said police and the district attorney's office declined to file charges in the case because of a lack of evidence.

"No evidence suggests or implies that a sexual assault occurred," Sharper's New Orleans lawyer, Nandi F. Campbell, said in a statement.

Sharper is a five-time Pro Bowl selection who also played for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.
