DeAngelo Williams believes he'll be back with Panthers
Nothing matters until the Carolina Panthers put the money in front of DeAngelo Williams, but with the running back headed to unrestricted free agency he still believes he’ll be with the same team soon.
The Panthers chose to place the franchise tag on center Ryan Kalil, but the club has prioritized re-signing Williams and new coach Ron Rivera has expressed his desire to bring him back.
“My initial reaction was that's a lot of money Kalil's going to be making. Then I was like, 'We get to keep Kalil,'” Williams said on ESPN, according to the Charlotte Observer.
“I've never not placed myself with the Carolina Panthers because that's the only team I've ever played for. That's the team that drafted me and gave me an opportunity when 26 other teams passed me by. So I'm going to hold loyal to them as long as they hold loyal to me.
“But in the event that they don't want to re-sign me, hopefully there's 31 other teams that will give me an opportunity to play for them.”
Nothing can be sorted out until there is a new collective bargaining agreement in place, but there seems to be cautious optimism that could happen in the next few weeks. Then, we’ll see a delayed start to free agency.
