Death of fan who fell at Soldier Field ruled an accident

A 23-year-old man died from multiple injuries after he fell from a ledge at Soldier Field during Sunday’s game between the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles.

Stuart Haverty, of Woodstock, Ill., was pronounced dead after 5 p.m. CT, after he was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Haverty fell about 35 feet from the colonnade level on the west side of the stadium, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Multiple accounts were given to police. One was that Haverty went on a ledge to smoke a cigarette. Another is that he ran and jumped off the ledge. There is a railing about 3 feet high. This is the first fatal fall since the stadium was reopened in 2003.

“We hope this is an isolated incident,” said Soldier Field spokesman Luca Serra after he said no plans were in place to make changes to the outside of the stadium.
