DeMaurice Smith added to legal team for players

The NFL players involved in the lawsuit against the NFL in federal court have filed a motion to add DeMaurice Smith, the head of the trade association known as the NFLPA, as a member of their legal team.

The news, reported today by Jason La Canfora of NFL.com, allows Smith to take an active or even lead role in settlement talks that could be held with owners. In that instance, the trade association would not be accused of serving as a union, which of course it isn’t.

Whether or not mediation talks get kick-started again remains to be seen. The players and owners held a conference call today and so far that chat has remained secret as the sides have agreed to keep it private. How long that lasts, well, we’ll see.
