Applewhite played collegiately at San Diego State and was a first-team All-MWC as junior and honorable mention All-MWC as sophomore before declaring for the NFL Draft following his junior season. He finished his career with the Aztecs with 126 tackles, 17 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss.
