Donovan McNabb had been demoted to No. 3
Joe Webb had leapfrogged Donovan McNabb on the depth chart for the Minnesota Vikings and that is what led him to seek his release from the club.
Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500 in the Twin Cities cites sources in reporting that McNabb had been asked to run the scout team in practice in recent weeks, and was informed he would be the No. 3 quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos at the Metrodome.
So, McNabb, who was benched in mid-October and replaced by rookie Christian Ponder, had fallen so far that there was little chance he could get back on the field for the Vikings. Minnesota traded a sixth-round draft pick for McNabb to the Washington Redskins. It was a move that didn’t work out and if the Vikings can create a little momentum with Ponder down the stretch, they will have a building block moving into 2012.
