Eli Manning likes addition of Ryan Nassib

Count Eli Manning among those who thought it was a good idea for the New York Giants to trade up in Saturday’s fourth round in order to draft Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib.

Manning called Nassib shortly after it happened to congratulate him. The Giants don’t have a pressing need behind Manning but some figured Nassib would come off the board in the first round or no later than the second round and there he was when Round 4 got rolling on Saturday. The Giants thought the value was too much to pass up so they got aggressive and drafted him.

I think that's pretty normal,” Manning said, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Lewdger. “I think it's always good to have a good quarterback to come in and learn and be prepared. You never know what happens in this league, and you always have to have quality players on your team and quarterbacks, and so I think it's a good thing. Looking forward to working with a young guy.”

If Nassib pans out, maybe the Giants eventually wind up trading him. Manning is 32 and will be entrenched for some time. That goes back to the value being too good to pass up at that point in the draft.

“I feel like I'm playing at a high level, and this is the prime of my career, and I appreciate my job every day,” Manning said. “I'm fortunate that I get to play quarterback in the NFL, and I love all the aspects of the work that goes into it, and I'm still hungry to improve my game and to get better and to win more championships for New York. And so I understand that one day it will end.”

It will be interesting to see if Nassib can push veteran backup David Carr as things move forward this offseason. One thing the Giants have had is more flexibility because typically they have carried only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. That could change now.
