Falcons sign coach Mike Smith to three-year extension

The Atlanta Falcons announced that coach Mike Smith has signed a three-year contract extension, a deal that has been in the works for several weeks.

The Falcons were 13-3 this past season and had the best record in the NFC before being eliminated in the divisional round by the Green Bay Packers.

Smith has a 33-15 record in three seasons, easily the best three-year stretch in franchise history.

“When we hired Mike Smith in 2008, we believed we had found the total package: a head coach with strong leadership skills and experience and the track record to back it up, and a man of high character and integrity,” owner Arthur Blank said in a statement released by the tea,. “In his three seasons with us, Coach Smith has demonstrated all of these characteristics, and then some.

“We are pleased to extend Smitty’s contract, and we are very proud of the way he represents the Falcons through his coaching of our players, in supporting our club’s business goals, and through his caring for our fans and the community.”

It would not be a surprise if the next move that follows for the Falcons is a contract extension for general manager Thomas Dimitroff.
