Favre: "This is the best team I've ever been on"
Now hear this: The 2009 Minnesota Vikings are the best team Brett Favre has ever quarterbacked.
The just turned 40-year-old gunslinger made that announcement Sunday afternoon in the bowels of the Edward Jones Dome after the St. Louis Rams had just about as much to do with a thorough 38-10 beating as Favre did.
“I think physically and from a talent level, this is the best team I’ve ever been on,’’ Favre told reporters in the postgame.
Seems like we’ve heard that line before, but maybe Favre has a point. He’s off to the first 5-0 start of his career, and there are only four other teams in the unbeaten ranks right now—the Giants and Saints in the NFC and Broncos and Colts in the AFC. Favre has the best running back in the game to hand off to in Adrian Peterson, a better offensive line than the one he left in Green Bay and he’s only improving his chemistry with the wide receivers. The defense, led by pass-rushing freak Jared Allen, is stout.
But we just think we’ve heard that before. A ha! It doesn’t take a long look through the Favre files to come up with a similar reference. Rewind less than two weeks ago and you’ll find it.
“You guys laughed at me two years (ago in Green Bay) before our 13-3 season when I said this was probably the most talented team I’d ever played on,’’ Favre said leading into the Green Bay-Minnesota game he played so well in. “Everyone thought I was crazy.”
We’re not doubting Favre’s sincerity for a moment, but remember he did win a Super Bowl. That, of course, is supposed to be the real reason he came out of retirement again—to chase another ring. We’ll see if Favre can make this declaration again in a few months.
