Former Saints coach John North dies at 89

Former New Orleans Saints John North passed away at his home in Mandeville, La., according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. North was 89.

North was named the head coach of the Saints just before the start of the 1973 season. His teams were 5-9 in his first two seasons and when the Saints got off to a 1-5 start in 1975, he was fired and finished with an 11-23 record. Ernie Hefferle took over for the remainder of the ’75 season and then Hank Stram was hired.

North played wide receiver for the Baltimore Colts from 1948-1950. He coached in the high school and college ranks before joining the NFL with the Detroit Lions in 1965. After he was fired in New Orleans, he was an assistant coach for the Atlanta Falcons for seven years and returned to New Orleans with the Breakers in the USFL for one season as the quarterbacks coach.
