Garrett Hartley safe in New Orleans, for now

Garrett Hartley became the first kicker in the history of the Super Bowl to make three field goals from 40 yards or further last year.

Thursday night, he looked like he was intent on becoming the next ex-kicker of the New Orleans Saints.

Hartley missed both of his tries left from 46 and 32 yards and it made the final minutes of the Saints’ 14-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings interesting.

But Hartley is safe. For now.

“A year ago I would have had three kickers in today,” Saints coach Sean Payton said on Sirius NFL Radio, according to the Twitter account of Ross Rucker. “He kicked well in the postseason . He's our kicker.”

Hartley kicked well in the regular season a year ago, too, making 13-of-13 tries. He was 22-of-24 over the previous two seasons but the only thing that matters now is that he’s 0-for-2. Dome kickers should be outstanding. Hartley is safe for now. Another bad week and Payton might have six kickers in for tryouts.
