Gates will see specialist about foot injury

San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates is scheduled to see a specialist regarding his troublesome right foot, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Gates had surgery on his foot after the 2007 season and last year played on a torn plantar fascia, and even sat out the last four games of 2010.

As he searches for answers, Gates said the real issue is whether he is better off trying to play through any pain he can tolerate and going through that on a weekly basis or shutting it down long enough to make it through the season without pain when he returns.

“I think those questions are still in the air,” Gates said. “… Rest can definitely help, but it’s a combination of, at what point is the worst-case scenario for me? Is it going to be a situation where if I rest it ain’t going to make a difference if I come back and run, because you have to get through the scar tissue?

“It’s always up to me and how much pain I can tolerate. And I think to me, that’s the most deceiving thing about MRI, because they tell you how you (are) structurally. But they can’t, no one can just tell you how you feel.”
