Geno Smith throws three interceptions in loss to Patriots

New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter of a 13-10 loss to the New England Patriots, ruining any chances of an upset victory.

The Jets also dropped six passes, three by Clyde Gates.

Two veteran offensive linemen for the Jets, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Willie Colon, were ejected at the end of the game.

"There were costly mistakes that were completely on me," Smith told reporters. "I didn't get it done. I take full responsibility for it. I will get better."

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, who needs to have shoulder surgery at some point, told the NFL Network before kickoff: "I won the competition, no doubt."

It seems unlikely that the Jets will turn back to Sanchez now since Smith is the future, but you never know.

Smith completed 15 of 36 passes for 214 yards for a 27.6 passer rating.

Now, Smith is the fifth rookie quarterback to lose to Patriots coach Bill Belichick in Foxboro, Mass.

"During that time of the game, I have to be more mindful of the situation," Smith said. "I made a decision that ultimately cost my team. It hurt. I can't lie, it hurt, but it's only the beginning.

"We've got to get better from it. don't like to look at it as a learning experience, because I think I'm ready for this. I know I'm ready for this."
