Giant boost as Kenny Phillips returns

Kenny Phillips’ goal was to be on the practice field for the New York Giants when training camp opened.

After undergoing microfracture knee surgery following the second game last season, he targeted a healthy return for the beginning of 2010. He wasn’t that far off the mark. The talented safety was on the field for the Giants this morning, a week into camp in Albany, N.Y.

According to the New York Daily News, Phillips was in for 12 plays in team drills. He deflected one pass. Coach Tom Coughlin ruled him out of the preseason opener next Monday but indicated there is ample time for Phillips to win a starting job. Getting him back would provide a real boost for a unit that was maligned a year ago.
