Giants fire defensive coordinator Sheridan

From The Star-Ledger:

Monday afternoon, Giants president and CEO John Mara told the media "status quo is not acceptable on any level" for the organization -- including the coaching staff. The first change came a few hours later.

Coach Tom Coughlin fired defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, the team announced Monday evening, a move that was expected after Sheridan's unit gave up 427 points this season -- the second-most in franchise history. In five games, the Giants allowed the opponent to score 40 or more points.

After the Giants' 45-38 loss to the Eagles in December, Coughlin had publicly avowed support in his coordinator, saying he hadn't given thought to making a change and was confident in everything he is doing. But the embarrassing defensive performances in the Giants' final two lopsided losses of the season (41-9 to Carolina and 44-7 to Minnesota) seemed to ensure Sheridan would not remain a part of Coughlin's staff past this season.

Coughlin, Mara and general manager Jerry Reese said Monday afternoon that decisions on the coaching staff would be left up to Coughlin. Asked both if Coughlin had been told he would return next season and if Sheridan would also return, Coughlin said, "Well everything is being evaluated. I don't think anything's been -- we haven't had time to really sit and talk about anything."
