Giants like rookie P Matt Dodge only so much
New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has repeatedly professed his confidence in rookie punter Matt Dodge despite some early-season struggles.
That confidence, apparently, only goes so far. That’s because the Giants brought in veteran Hunter Smith for a workout on Tuesday, according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. The Giants didn’t sign Smith, but getting him in so they could kick his tires is surely a sign that Dodge needs to perform better or he will soon be the Giants’ ex-punter.
“I’m a very patient person," Coughlin said earlier this week when asked why he has so much patience in Dodge, who made a poor placement on a missed field goal last Sunday in the Giants’ 17-3 victory over the Chicago Bears.
Per Garafolo, it’s the second placement that Dodge has botched. Dodge has also struggled with his punting chores and just hasn’t shown consistency. The Giants like his upside but they’re not going to tolerate routine errors in the kicking game.
