Giants' new plan to keep ball away from DeSean Jackson
It’s fair to say one of the reasons Steve Weatherford has replaced Matt Dodge as the punter for the Giants is because of the electric return DeSean Jackson had to beat the Giants on the final play of the game last season.
It propelled the Eagles into the postseason and left the Giants, well, stunned.
Weatherford was signed as a free agent and he beat out Dodge during training camp and preseason. When the teams meet again Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field the plan is to keep the ball out of Jackson’s hands.
“Yeah, I mean we’re going to do our best to put the ball on the sidelines or out of bounds and limit the room he has to work with,” Weatherford said, according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. “Ideally, I’d like to have the ball out of bounds. That’s what Coach (Tom) Coughlin’s looking for. But getting the ball outside the numbers on the sidelines is going to be important if you’re not able to get it out of bounds.
“You can’t think about what you don’t want to do. You just go out there and visualize yourself making the play and punting the ball exactly where you want it to go.”
