Giants tag their punter

It doesn’t happen very often but the New York Giants have secured their punter. With the franchise tag.

Steve Weatherford was locked up for the 2012 season as the Giants placed the franchise tag on him just before today’s 4 p.m. deadline.

Weatherford proved to be a solid free-agent addition for the team this past season. He averaged 45.7 yards per punt and was terrific in the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI victory over the New York Giants. He had four punts and three inside the 20-yard line in the victory. Those three actually landed inside the 10-yard line.

The Giants have until July 16 to potentially sign Weatherford to a long-term contract.

He's not the first punter to get the franchise tag. The Falcons used it on Michael Koenen previously and the Panthers once exercised the franchise tag on Todd Sauerbrun.
