Good news for brother of Mathias Kiwanuka
The extended New York Giants family was able to breathe a sigh of relief when general manager Jerry Reese said earlier today that Benedict Kiwanuka, the brother of defensive lineman Mathias Kiwanuka, has been upgraded to stable condition after a motorcycle accident on Friday that also involved Mathias.
The accident happened in Indianapolis and Benedict suffered a serious arm injury and was in critical condition over the weekend after being thrown 100 feet from his bike, according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. Mathias was not injured.
“(Benedict) probably has a long road back,” Reese said, per the report. “But everything looked like it was going to work out for him. It sounds like (Benedict) is going to be OK.”
Mathias is expected to participate in the voluntary offseason workout program this week. It is not believed he was wearing a helmet but police have not cited him in the accident. Teams get very concerned about players riding motorcycles and certainly Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is a prime example of that.
“Obviously, we’d like for guys to be careful,” Reese said. “But I’m going to walk out here on the golf course and somebody could hit me between the eyes with a golf ball.
“We ask them to be careful and be responsible if you’re riding a bike. I’m not sure what was happening. I don’t know if they were drag racing or just riding a leisure ride. I’m not sure what the details on that were. We like for guys to be careful, but it’s a dangerous world.”
