'Hard Knocks' falls through the cracks this summer

Rex Ryan, the Darrelle Revis holdout and the New York Jets were going to be an impossible act to follow.

So, maybe it’s best there will not be a season of “Hard Knocks” this summer. Peter King reported that HBO will not produce the popular behind-the-scenes series this summer.

The decision does not come as a surprise. No team has stepped forward to volunteer the kind of access that helps drive great storylines. The bigger problem, of course, is no one can say when training camps will open. While it looks promising that the NFL could swing into full gear this coming week, we thought that last week. Some people thought that the week before that. That, in itself, has created a logistical nightmare.

Hopefully, HBO can return with the series in 2012 when labor peace should reign.
