Hargrove signs RFA tender with Saints
Anthony Hargrove, it appears, isn’t going anywhere.
The versatile New Orleans defensive lineman has signed his tender offer with the club as a restricted free agent, the team announced, and is expected to be with the Saints this season. Hargrove re-started his career with the Saints this past season and had a strong showing. He played both tackle and end and made five sacks to go with 63 tackles.
Hargrove had visited the Detroit Lions and there was wide speculation that they might make a run at signing the player to an offer sheet. Thing is, with no salary cap this year it’s tough for teams to lure RFA’s away from others that are up against the number. It seems that the clubs have a gentleman’s agreement not to use poison pills in deals, either. The Lions might have figured it was useless trying to sign Hargrove to an offer sheet that they figured the Saints would simply match.
New Orleans will benefit from Hargrove’s return, particularly as the team looks to shore up its defensive line after the release of veteran defensive end Charles Grant. Alex Brown, released by the Chicago Bears last Thursday, could be an option.
