Hasselbeck, Locker in 'friendly' QB competition

Even as the Tennessee Titans have indicated that their quarterback position will be open when training camp starts, the two competitors in the fray certainly are not putting their personal desires ahead of the game.

Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker both are saying all the right things even as their mentor/pupil relationship could soon become much more competitive with the No. 1 spot on the Titans depth chart at stake in preseason.

“I don't think anything really changed for us, except that now we've got to talk about it,” said Hasselbeck via TitanInsider.com. “Once Coach (Mike) Munchak talked about it, now it's one of those things that it's there. Nothing's changing, nothing's new, but now we have to talk about it and people are going to write about it. That's the only thing that's new.”

Likewise, Locker, who as the quarterback of the future should eventually gain a hold on the job, is simply focusing on improving himself and the Titans, not the battle that looms with Hasselbeck.

"I'm gonna go out and do everything I can to make myself the best player I possibly can and help this team win games to the best of my ability. I don't think it's a thing where you've got to look at what Matt does, what I do and figure out what I have to do to beat him,” Locker said. “I've got to do whatever I have to do to make myself the best player I possibly can. And in doing that, you hope it's good enough to win you the job, and I know Matt that will approach it the same way, and in the end, it's gonna make both of us better, I truly believe, because we'll be pushing each other and we will get the best out of each other.”
