Haynesworth groping trial begins Tuesday

Albert Haynesworth has left his Washington Redskins tenure in the past, but he still has one major hurdle to clear before he can fully put his time in the nation’s capital in the rearview mirror.

Haynesworth will be on trial in District of Columbia Superior Court to answer for charges regarding a misdemeanor sex abuse charge in which a cocktail waitress alleged that the star defensive tackle groped her.

According to Laurel J. Sweet of the Boston Herald, if convicted and given the maximum sentence, Haynesworth could spend six months in jail and be lost to his new team for the entire 2011 season.

Haynesworth was accused by the waitress of fondling her breast as he slipped his debit card into her bra to cover a tab of $811 at the P.O.V. Lounge atop the W Hotel in Washington at a private party on Feb. 13.
Haynesworth signed a $100 million contract with the Redskins in 2009, but got sideways with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan over his conditioning and his reluctance to play in the 3-4 defense the Redskins were installing. He was dealt to the Patriots once the lockout ended this summer.
