Hospital launching aggressive probe of how Jason Pierre-Paul medical chart leaked

Miami-based Jackson Memorial Hospital has launched an "aggressive" investigation into how New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's medical chart was leaked to ESPN. Pierre-Paul had his index finger amputated following a fireworks accident and a photo of his chart before his surgery was shown on Twitter and on television by ESPN. “Late Wednesday, media reports surfaced purportedly showing a Jackson Memorial Hospital patient’s protected health information, suggesting it was leaked by an employee,” Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System, said in a statement. “An aggressive internal investigation looking into these allegations is underway. If these allegations prove to be true, I know the entire Jackson family will share my anguish. Our nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals are passionate about our patients’ health and well-being, and that includes the right to privacy. "If we confirm Jackson employees or physicians violated a patient’s legal right to privacy, they will be held accountable, up to and including possible termination. We do not tolerate violations of this kind. In order to protect our patients’ rights and private information, we enforce strict rules for those who handle patient information and continually educate all employees on privacy regulations. Those rules are constantly evolving as technology changes, but always remain focused on putting our patients first.” This is a violation of HIPAA rules by whomever leaked it. ESPN has pointed out that it's not illegal for it to report the information. There have been questions raised as to whether it's journalistically ethical, though, and why was it necessary for ESPN to show the chart instead of just reporting the information. As for Pierre-Paul, he's out indefinitely while he recovers from his surgery. He hasn't met with Giants team officials since the accident.
