Jaguars jettison Garrard, will start McCown

Jack Del Rio obviously doesn’t mind gambling with his job security.

But for now at least Del Rio has more job security than David Garrard.

The Jaguars, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.com, have sent their starting quarterback packing in much the same way Garrard ascended to the top of the depth chart four years ago. Then, Garrard won a much-publicized battle with Byron Leftwich, who was released just before the start of the season.

The Jaguars will now go with Luke McCown, who leapfrogs rookie first-round pick Blaine Gabbert for the moment, and will make the start Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Coaches in the final year of their contracts are sometimes prone to make moves that appear desperate in order to try and improve their job security long-term, but Del Rio and the Jaguars are seriously rolling the dice here, jettisoning the most experienced quarterback on the roster.
