Jaguars look at coordinators in coaching search

While big names like Jeff Fisher and Brian Billick are tossed about (and in some cases flown in by helicopter) for NFL coaching vacancies, the Jacksonville Jaguars look to be taking the offensive coordinator path in their head coaching search.

Not only is interim coach Mel Tucker, who was the Jaguars' defensive coordinator, in the running, but the Florida Times-Union reports that this week interviews will begin for up to five head coaching candidates - all currently serving as offensive coordinators at other places in the league.

Names on the list include the previously reported Mike Mularkey of Atlanta and Brian Schottenheimer of the New York Jets. Other names include Carolina's Rob Chudzinski, Denver's Mike McCoy and New England's Bill O'Brien.

It makes sense since the Jaguars need someone who can try to right last year's first-round pick Blaine Gabbert, who often looked shellshocked compared to other rookie QBs like Cam Newton and Andy Dalton (and even T.J. Yates and Jake Locker in lesser roles).

Other than O'Brien, who works with a veteran in Tom Brady, the other four coordinators have all been working with young quarterbacks in their current positions with varying degrees of success. Another name not included in the list above, but according to what sources tell NFP is Bengals OC Jay Gruden.
