Jameis Winston's Accuser Filing Civil Suit
With exactly two weeks before the start of the 2015 NFL Draft, former Florida State quarterback and presumed number-one overall pick Jameis Winston will be returning to the courtroom.
Erica Kinsman, a former FSU student and the quarterback's sexual assault accuser of an incident stemming from 2012, filed a civil suit against Winston in Florida state court on Thursday. Kinsman alleges that Winston is guilty of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Kinsman's Colorado-based attorneys are seeking $15,000 in punitive damages. Her representation released the following statement:
"Erica hopes to show other survivors the strength and empowerment that can come from refusing to stay silent no matter what forces are against you. Jameis Winston in contrast has proven time and time again to be an entitled athlete who believes he can take what he wants. He took something here that he was not entitled to and he hurt someone. There are consequences for that behavior and since others have refused to hold him accountable, our client will."
Winston's lawyer, David Cornwell, has yet to respond.
Winston has been cleared of the allegations on three separate occasions, as no arrest was made, and both a dismissal of charges from the state attorney's office and a student code of conduct hearing previously cleared the Heisman winner of wrongdoing.
Winston is likely to receive a signing bonus upwards of $15 million guaranteed upon his draft selection.
