Jerry Rice: 49ers need to deactivate Ray McDonald
If Jerry Rice was running the show in San Francisco, defensive lineman Ray McDonald wouldn't be playing.
McDonald was arrested during the preseason for allegedly assaulting his pregnant fiancee. He has not been charged with a crime at this time. Even so, Rice, appearing on SI Now Live, believes the 49ers should sit McDonald until the issue is resolved.
"I would have just totally taken him off of the field until it was resolved," Rice said. "But they have decided to let him play and it's just unfortunate. I feel that when you have something that’s weighing you down like that, because it’s a very important topic, and it’s very sensitive, I just feel he should have been taken off the field.”
It's been a heated issue, and one where the 49ers may see the pressure intensify with. The Ravens released Ray Rice after a video showing him punchin his now-wife was published. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson (indicted on child abuse allegations) and Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy (found guilty by a judge for assaulting his ex-girlfriend) have been placed on their respective team's Exempt/Commissioner's Permission list. The Cardinals have placed running back Jonathan Dwyer on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list after he was arrested Wednesday night for a domestic violence incident alleged to have occurred this summer.
The 49ers have yet to act and don't appear like they will. At this time, McDonald is still likely to play on Sunday.
