Jets' Kenrick Ellis set for trial next week

New York Jets defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis is set to go to trial next Tuesday on a charge of malicious wounding from 2010 at Hampton University in Virginia, according to ESPNNewYork.com.

If convicted on the charge, Ellis could face up to 20 years in prison for the felony. He is also facing a civil lawsuit as well filed by Dennis Eley, who was seeking $3 million in damages. The lawsuit was withdrawn, but apparently will be re-filed, according to the report.

The Jets knew about the charges facing when they selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Witnesses have said Ellis, who is a citizen of Jamaica but has lived here since he was 11 years old, acted in self defense after the alleged victim was harassing his girlfriend.
