Jets owner OK with Rex Ryan visiting son at Clemson

Jets coach Rex Ryan took a lot of heat for attending the Clemson-Georgia football game last Saturday.

Ryan did so to see his son play — or stand on the sideline — in his first collegiate game. Ryan's son Seth is a walk-on at Clemson, and the father wanted to be there for him whether he got in the game or not.

That drew some criticism from the New York media, which thought he should have been with the franchise during the day, when it was deciding final cuts.

Regardless of what was said, Jets owner Woody Johnson spoke up in defense of Ryan on Wednesday.

"I would have gone, too," Johnson said, via the New York Daily News. "He had done all his work and was available by phone if we needed him. He made all the calls to the players we were interested in getting. Number one, he regretted that his dad never came to any of his games, so he wasn't about to make that same mistake particularly on a day that didn't really make any difference."

The story seemed to be blown a bit out of proportion, given that technological advances in society, such as cellphones and laptops, allow people to connect across the globe.

Regardless, Ryan's seat continues to get warmer. He'll need to reach the playoffs to have any hopes of returning in 2014.
