Jim Harbaugh not ready to name his starting QB

Pete Carroll didn’t waste any time at the start of training camp, stepping out and naming Tarvaris Jackson the starting quarterback for his team, a little bit of a surprise based on the timing.

But Seattle’s NFC West rival the San Francisco 49ers will not be accused of jumping to conclusions. The Niners have yet to name Alex Smith their starter, a bit of a surprise given the level of offseason fawning between the team and its former No. 1 overall draft pick.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News writes about it and coach Jim Harbaugh says he’s not going to let someone else’s timetable impact his.

"I just don't have any pressure on myself to name a starting quarterback in a timetable manner," Harbaugh said.

Smith has started both preseason games and all expectations are he will be the man when the season opens Sept. 11. He hasn’t exactly overwhelmed but then again, when has he? Second-round pick Colin Kaepernick, who the Niners like for the future, has been up-and-down in preseason himself.

Harbaugh said he’s name a starter before the opener. That leaves him with 2
