Jim Harbaugh says 49ers are betting on Randy Moss

Randy Moss will show up next week for the voluntary offseason program with the San Francisco 49ers.

The veteran wide receiver is missing the first two weeks and that was part of the plan hatched by coach Jim Harbaugh.

Maybe it caters to Moss but the bottom line is the team knows Moss is going to arrive in top shape. Conditioning is not an issue for Moss. The question that needs to be answered is can he perform at a high level again? The Moss that last played in the NFL in 2010 for three clubs – New England, Minnesota and Tennessee – was not the kind of player that is going to contribute to the Niners.

We believe he's got the ability, so he's got that,” Harbaugh said during a visit on KNBR, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “He'll have the license to go out and compete, and we believe that that's what Randy Moss wants to do. The reality, of course, will all play out, and we'll watch that unfold, whatever that is.

“We're betting it's going to be somebody that's going to contribute and be a factor on our football team in a really positive way. I think Randy's got a chance to put a real stamp on his great NFL career, which could be a Hall of Fame career. We'd like to be a small part of that, selfishly, for our team. We'd like to see it be a great year for Randy Moss.”

Moss has had a Hall of Fame career, there is no questioning that. If he can be a vertical threat, he can help the Niners, who signed him to what amounts to a risk-free contract.
