Jimmy Smith out for 'few weeks'
Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith will be sidelined for the time being with a foot sprain, coach John Harbaugh announced on Monday.
Smith did not sustain a Lisfranc injury, which would have been a more serious injury. But the foot sprain is enough to keep him out for a "few weeks," Harbaugh said.
Not having Smith makes the Ravens even thinner at the cornerback position. With Asa Jackson on the injured reserve-designated to return list, Baltimore only has Lardarius Webb, Dominique Franks and Chykie Brown available to them. There is a possibility that the Ravens call up Tramain Jacobs from the practice squad.
However, to mask the depth issues at cornerback, the Ravens have used more than two safeties in various substitution packages, with Matt Elam playing the nickel spot. That's something likely to continue with Smith out.
Making matters more concerning for Baltimore is that the Ravens secondary will defend a resurgent passing game from the Steelers this week. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is coming off of a game against the Colts where he threw for 522 yards and six touchdowns.
