Joe Philbin: 'We're going to have a better workplace'

INDIANAPOLIS -- In the wake of the bullying scandal that rocked his locker room, Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin vowed that he'll upgrade the work environment going forward.

'We're going to have a better workplace, I promise that happens," said Philbin, speaking in a louder, more authoritative voice than his usual understated manner.. "I have to do a better job. I'm going to look at every avenue."

One of the criticisms of Philbin, who broke his silence today at the NFL scouting combine, is that he didn't have a good feel for what was happening with the alleged harassment of offensive tackle Jonathan Martin by teammates Richie Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey. The Dolphins have fired trainer Kevin O'Neill, who didn't cooperate with the Ted Wells investigation, and offensive line coach Jim Turner, who allegedly gave a male blow-up doll to offensive lineman Andrew McDonald and also didn't defend Martin.

"If I had heard of these acts going on, I would have intervened immediately," Philbin said, speaking generally about the Dolphins' problems.

Philbin promised he'll stay on top of things going forward.

"I'm going to be more vigilant, more diligent, more visible, and I'm going to have a better pulse," Philbin said.

Philbin condemned what happened on his watch.

"The behavior, the language in the report was inappropriate and unacceptable," he said. "We're going to do things about it. I want everybody to know I'm the one that's responsible for the work place environment at the Miami Dolphins' facility."
