John Abraham seeking '12-plus' per year to stick in Atlanta

John Abraham is looking for something close to $12 million per season to stick with the Falcons, a figure for a soon-to-be 34-year-old that could potentially price him out of Atlanta.

The club will meet with Abraham’s agent Rich Rosa this weekend, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Initial talks have not produced much, per the reports, and this is a “do or die” moment for the sides.

Abraham told 790 The Zone in Atlanta earlier this week that he is seeking “12-plus” per season.

“Check out the five top ends. Everybody is getting 12-plus. I made eight million last year. Everybody is saying, ‘Oh, he’s so greedy,’” Abraham said. “How am I greedy when I’m just trying to get paid the same thing they are getting paid? There are guys out there getting more money than me, but my production is the same as theirs or at least close.”

The club obviously is concerned about being protected moving forward because while his play hasn’t fallen off yet, he’s older now and it could soon. Abraham maintains his first preference is to remain in Atlanta. We’ll see if the sides can discover some common ground this weekend with the team in a bit of a tough spot with 17 total free agents to consider.
