John Bonamego rejoins Saints

The New Orleans Saints announced that they have completed their coaching staff with an addition and some reshuffling.

John Bonamego, who coached special teams the past three seasons for the Miami Dolphins, was added as an assistant special teams coach. It’s his second stint with the franchise as he was the team’s special teams coordinator in 2006 and 2007.

Bonamego takes the place of Mike Mallory, who was moved from assistant special teams coach to assistant secondary coach where he will work under Tony Oden. The decision was made to promote Oden, who was the assistant secondary coach, to take the place of Dennis Allen, who departed to become the defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.

“Tony has worked hard to help develop our defensive backs and has a strong understanding of our defensive philosophy,” coach Sean Payton said in a statement release by the team. “This promotion from within helps us maintain continuity on a defense that has continued to improve, especially in the secondary.

“Mike and John are both excellent coaches as well and men that I’ve enjoyed being able to work with. I believe Mike will be a strong contributor to our defense, just as he has been to our special teams the past three years, and I look forward to working with John again.”
