Seattle Seahawks tight end John Carlson can watch the replay of his reception last Sunday at Soldier Field, but has no memory of the end of the play that resulted in him suffering his third concussion between Notre Dame and the NFL.

Carlson leaped to avoid Chicago Bears safety Danieal Manning and wound up being upended. He came down and landed on his facemask, knocking him out.

“It looked like it hurt,” Carlson told the West Central Tribube in Willmar, Minn., near his hometown.

“The first thing I remember after that was being in the ambulance. I was confused at first, but the team doctor was there with me and told me right away where I was and what was going on. From then on, I was getting more and more alert.”

He was forced to remain in Chicago for a night to undergo observation before being allowed to return to Seattle.

“The NFL is really doing a good job of protecting the players who get concussions,” Carlson. “The helmets are very protective of our heads. It’s not the skull that gets damaged slamming into the helmet, it’s the brain slamming into the skull.”

Now, he’s got to weigh his future moving forward though, knowing concussions can come again.
