Jones-Drew expected to hit free agency

Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew is expected to hit free agency in March, but Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell indicated that the team would still be interested in re-signing the team’s top runner.

John Oesher of reported via Twitter that, “Caldwell wouldn't envision signing MJD before free agency. Says MJD has earned the right to test market.”

While that could be loosely translated to mean that the Jaguars don’t want to overpay for a running back who saw his average per carry plummet to a career-low 3.4 yards his season, either way it appears that the 28-year-old Jones-Drew will have a chance to test his value on the open mar-ket. Jones-Drew just finished his eighth season.

Jones-Drew led the league in rushing in 2011 with 1,606 yards. He held out in 2012 and then suffered through an injury-riddled season. He had 803 yards rushing this season.
