Kevin Kolb understanding of Andy Reid's decision
Give him credit. Kevin Kolb understands the decision that has been made by Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid.
It can’t sit well with him, but he gets it after Reid announced that Michael Vick would be the team’s new starting quarterback.
Kolb, who was the first person Reid informed of the move, suffered a concussion in the first half of the team’s opener against the Green Bay Packers. It was a difficult way to lose his starting job, the one he took over after the team traded away Donovan McNabb during the offseason. After all, Reid and the organization had backed him so thoroughly and so strongly, even when Vick performed well in preseason.
“I want to be out there," Kolb said, according to Martin Frank of the Wilmington (Del.) News Journal. "I have confidence in [Reid] that he's doing what's right for our team, for [Vick], for my career. That's the only way I can approach it.
"In this business, there are a lot of changes. If you can't roll with them and get better from them, then you better just quit. And that's obviously not the card for me. I plan on getting better from this."
It’s not a temporary move until Kolb is ready. The young passer has already been cleared for a return. This was a permanent move. While it doesn’t mean the Eagles have given up on Kolb by any stretch of the imagination, they have for this season.
“My feelings about Kevin Kolb have not changed a bit," Reid said. “The players respect the heck out of Kevin. We all know that. They all know Kevin will win football games.”
Kolb remains upbeat but you have to wonder whether he’ll be seeking a new home after the season. Can he trust Reid in the future? It’s a sensitive situation, one that will be made better for Reid and the Eagles if Vick performs well and the team wins.
“My future is as bright as ever," Kolb said. "I have faith that it will work out here and I look forward to starting again here one day. As of right now, I'm the backup and I'll do what’s best for the team and for Mike.”
