Lions claim WR Mitchell off waivers

Five Washington Redskins were waived on Monday and two of them have been claimed. Running back P.J. Hill was picked up by the New Orleans Saints, and the Detroit Lions have grabbed wide receiver Marko Mitchell.

Mitchell, a seventh-round draft pick from Nevada a year ago by the Redskins, was somewhat of a surprise release considering how productive he was last year. But Washington has gone the veteran route at the position and now Mitchell will have a chance to stick with the Lions.

Mitchell has an intriguing combination of size and speed. He is 6-4, 215 pounds, and he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds at the scouting combine, according to John Niyo of the Detroit News.

Typically, teams that are as bad as the Redskins – they drafted fourth last month – don’t have players picked off like this. Maybe Hill and Mitchell were not good fits. Maybe they will flourish elsewhere.
