Lions will induct Jason Hanson in team's ring of honor

The Detroit Lions will induct Jason Hanson into the team’s Ring of Honor during a home game at Ford Field this coming season.

That will make Hanson the 14th member to be inducted – and the only one not currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 21-year kicker made his retirement official on Tuesday during a press conference that was attended by the club’s vice chairman Bill Ford Jr., according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Hanson and the Lions talked about a contract but one never materialized and he said that pain in his left plant heel was the driving force behind his decision to walk away from the game.

It is difficult for kickers and punters to be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It’s too early to say what Hanson’s chances are and without clutch postseason kicks on his resume, it’s not going to be easy. But Hanson holds the NFL record with 52 field goals from 50-plus yards along with the most games played with one team – 327. He is third with 495 field goals and in points with 2,150.
