Logan Mankins cashes in big time

It took a while but Logan Mankins set the bar for interior offensive linemen.

The six-year contract the New England Patriots guard signed Wednesday is a whopper. Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston delivered the numbers and they are eye-opening. Mankins’ deal is worth $52.25 million and includes a $20 million signing bonus. With a base pay of $1.5 million this season, he will earn $21.5 million or double what he was set to pull down with the franchise tag.

His base pay climbs to $3 million in 2012, $6 million in 2013, $6.5 million in 2014 and $7 million in 2015 and 2016.

He’s easily the highest-paid interior lineman in the NFL now, and he has a significantly lower salary cap number for this season than he would have had. Looks like sitting out half of last season didn’t hurt him too much.
