Manning, Welker building timing

The Denver Broncos arguably have the top trio of wide receivers in the league in Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Wes Welker.

It's a process, though, to build timing with Welker, the former New England Patriots star.

“The more repetitions that he and I can get together versus certain coverages, he and Chris Harris have good battles in practice every single day,” Manning said following a 40-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. ”It’s going to make Chris better and it’s going to make me and Wes better. I do think that we connected on a few plays this week in training camp. It was very competitive and it was good to hit him on a couple of routes today. We had a blitz read where he and I were on the same page on a communication. And then hit him on a play down in the red zone that he’s scored a lot of touchdowns on in his career. Those were all positive.”

Could this setback be good for the Broncos in the long run?

“I think our team needs to improve and needs to use this week to get better," Manning said. "We have a long way to go. I don’t know who made those predications and what weight those really carry, but we had a lot of things that we need to fix and correct. I do think there are things that are correctable, but we have to do it. We can’t just keep saying we have to correct it, we have to go and do it.

"We have to get a few guys that have been injured back on the field. I know I’ve talked before about forming your identity and forming the chemistry of this team. We haven’t had all of our players at full speed. So hopefully that can start a little bit more this week. There were a few injuries tonight, but we still have work we need to put in and some improvements that I feel like we need to make. I know the coaches will harp on that all week and as players, we have to respond to those.”
